THE HAGUE, 07. DEC. 2016 – The Hague Prosecution is seeking life sentence for the former commander of the Army of the Serb Republic (VRS) Ratko Mladic. The 74-year old is charged with two counts of genocide, “part of the attempt to carve an ethnically pure Serb state out of multiethnic Bosnia, alongside political leader Radovan Karadzic, who was sentenced in March to 40 years’ prison”. Mladic has rejected the accusations made against him. The prosecutor said that “the time has come for General Mladic to be held responsible for crimes against all his victims and the community that he destroyed.” He spoke at the end of the closing arguments, in Mladic’s trial on charges that include genocide, murder and terrorizing. The defense team will present their arguments starting on December 9, and then on and December 12 and 13. Mladic’s trial began in May 2012. He was arrested in Serbia a year earlier, after hiding for 12 years, and extradited to the Hague Tribunal.
